Paul Newman Returns Home to Wife, Has Just Weeks Left to Live
Paul Newman has ended chemotherapy treatment and returned home, where he has told family he would like to die. The Oscar-winning star was photographed being pushed from a NY cancer hospital in a wheelchair.
Newman, 83, is said to have just weeks left to live. A source says that he did not want to die in a hospital, and so has returned home to his wife, Joanne Woodward. The source, a close family friend, says that Newman has spent the past few weeks getting his affairs in order. Some of his decisions, such as giving a Ferrari with his #82 on it to a long-time friend, are said to have caused tension amongst his children.
Newman and Woodward married in 1958, and have three daughters. Their children are said to be having an especially difficult time coming to grips with the situation. He also has two daughters from his first marriage to Jackie Witte. It was reported that last month Newman was getting his oldest daughter, Nell, ready to take over his Newman’s Own salad dressing company. All of the profits are given to a charitable foundation.
Newman himself has thus far declined to comment on his condition, other than saying he is “doing nicely.” Rumors about his health first surfaced in January.
He was nominated for ten Oscars, winning best actor for his role in The Color of Money in 1986.
